After that exciting ending to Ghost Town, I had really high hopes for the direction the series would take in Bite Club. While I did enjoy this installment, the first two-thirds or so felt like filler. It was fun filler, but filler all the same. When it starts, the residents of the Glass House just received a flyer for a new gym in town. It's not just an ordinary gym, but one where humans can learn to fight against vampires. Of course, Shane jumps at the chance to beat up a vampire. Meanwhile, more weird things are happening and Claire has to figure it out before it's too late.Bite Club was quite different than the previous books. The main reason being that we get Shane's POV. There's something really weird going on with him. It's more than just his new gym obsession. He's much quicker to lose his temper and he's not being the nicest to Claire. While it was interesting to get into Shane's head for once, I honestly don't think those sections were needed. I didn't feel like they added much except for extra pages. It's clear that something is wrong with him based on his interactions with everyone around him, so his sections were like more filler material.
The last third of Bite Club was really great though! Things finally pick up, we learn the truth about this new gym, and lots of exciting things happen which actually push the plot forward. It still didn't feel like the natural path for the series to take, and was a bit silly, but at least stuff got accomplished! I just wish it hadn't taken that long to get there. I also really liked how Claire's dream of going to MIT was finally brought up again, even if it's probably the worst time ever for her to have to think about that.
Bite Club was a fun addition to the series, even though it did feel out of place at times. I'm certainly excited to know what's coming next for Morganville's residents now that one threat is out of the way.

In this tenth installment of The Morganville Vampires series, Rachel Caine puts Shane through the ringer; figuratively and literally! The book picks up soon after the conclusion of the amazing Ghost Town, which is one of my favorite books in the series, along with Carpe Corpus.
A gym has opened up in Morganville, one that will be teaching humans self-defense by way of martial arts and will be taught by none other than a vampire. This is apparently what Shane has wanted in town his whole life, a gym where he can work on his fighting skills, and is pretty much first in line to sign up. Soon after this though, things begin to get strange. I know...shocker! When is it not strange in Morganville?
What was surprising, and very cool, was that we get two alternating perspectives in this book, Claire's and Shane's. Since Shane began training to fight, he starts to lose his cool over little things more and more often, and we get to peek into his head after these freak outs. Let me tell you, it's not pretty. It is completely heart wrenching. He is spiraling into this black hole and is not even aware of it. To top it off, he cruelly pushes Claire, Michael, and Eve away. Being the amazing friends that they are, those three won't ever give up Shane, no matter how bad it gets.
Meanwhile, Myrnin and Claire are still keeping Frank Collin's existence a secret from most everyone. It doesn't stay that way for long. Myrnin and Frank together crack me up because they hate each other so much. And I can't believe how unlikely a hero Frank has turned out to be these past two books! I'm also really intrigued by Amelie and Oliver's relationship...are they? Aren't they? Tell us!! )
A lot of people get hurt in this book, physically and emotionally. But there were also some really tender moments between Shane & Claire and Michael & Eve, who by the way have an interesting secret they have been keeping to themselves. Not everyone's excited or happy about this secret, but I totally was! No she's not preggers. P
I couldn't have been happier with the ending though. It was just so touching. Now lets see what trouble they'll get into in Last Breath. This series is so good and if you haven't gotten around to reading it, you need to soon!
In Bite Club, we're back in Morganville with Claire and the gang, and there's a new gym opening up. This is perfect for Shane, who feels the need to work off some of his anger issues. What he doesn't realize is that he's actually being recruited by followers of bad guy Bishop to become part of an elite human fighting force to take down the current vamps in charge. All Shane knows is that he loves fighting, and everyone in the world, including Claire, is against him. Add into the mix the invitation Claire has received to go to MIT (her lifelong dream), and it's questionable whether this couple's relationship can survive.
Bite Club has its moments, with Claire working closely with my favorite, Myrnin, and even taking charge of the situation more than once. I could definitely feel her struggle with her decision to remain in Morganville to be with Shane or leave to go to MIT, and her problems with Shane were heart breaking. I like having Shane's father Frank as the new "brain" behind the town, and the way Michael, Eve, and Claire stick together in order to discover what's going on with Shane's suddenly aggressive behavior is terrific. What I didn't like is how Claire was willing to stand by Shane despite his horrific behavior towards her (I know, I know, he was "under the influence" but he had to have had the tendencies for it to work). I think the author tried to give us insight into Shane's conflicted emotions through the vignettes from his point of view but that didn't really work for me, either. He was just being a jerk and Claire was way too accepting.
I love the Morganville series, and Bite Club actually surprised me with how much action it contained. I was beginning to worry where the conflicts for future novels would be coming, but Ms. Caine still has life to inject into this series. I just hope that with Claire's new sense of independence toward the vampires, she also grows some for herself in her relationship with Shane. Strong females need to be strong in all areas of their lives.
